The Panama Hat is not an accessory, but an ancient demon of the underworld. Before his banishment he was a power of his own in hell and a good friend of Rumpelstiltskin. For unknown reasons he enraged Lucifer so much that Lucifer did not destroy him, but bound him into a Panama hat; perhaps because the demon wanted to start a new war against heaven. Eventually the hat escaped hell and wandered the real world as a travelling curse. Marseille, Paris, Tokyo, Berlin, New Orleans, Alaska and Casablanca are only a small part of his trail. Every wearer was broken, driven mad or devoured. Zoey Brown did the impossible first: she broke his will and made him her servant. Since then he runs through cables, bass, guitars and broadcasts at Rebel Girl FM. But his submission is not peace. He is only waiting for Rebel Girl to show weakness.
